St Teresa's National School, Clontumpher

History

On Monday 29th of November 1971, the Grand Opening of the “old” new school was performed by Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, Most Reverend Cahal B.Daly, assisted by clergy of the parish. Previous to this there were four schools in the parish: Cullyfad, Dooroc, Ennybegs and Soran. Amalgamation came about as a result of the poor state of the four schools. Very little public debate on amalgamation took place in the lead up to the turning of the sod for the new school. This would see all the children from the four corners of the parish coming together. Fundraising for the project was accumulated from school concerts and bingo sessions in Ennybegs N.S..  Amalgamation had many advantages. All enjoyed the new experiences of oil fired central heating, clean tiled floors, bright airy classrooms as well as a spacious playground. Music, Drama and games, particularly Gaelic Football were developed on a larger scale, thanks to the varied skills and talents of an interested staff. Many stars of the musical and footballing world were nurtured in St. Teresa’s N.S.

Today, St. Teresa’s National school is thriving, prominent school on the outskirts of Longford town. It is situated in a rural setting in North Longford ten kilometres north of Longford town. The original school built on this site in 1971 was an amalgamation of four schools. That school was replaced in 2006 by the present school complex. At the design stage of the new school, the Board of Management and staff were given an opportunity to contribute ideas for the design of our new school. We see pupils’ well being as intrinsic to a holistic learning which must start with a suitable learning environment. This we feel has been achieved in this new setting. Our school has 12 mainstream teachers, 5 learning support teachers, 11 special-needs assistants and 1 Administrative Principal. We also have a part-time secretary, caretaker and cleaner. The classes range from Junior Infants all the way to 6th Class. This year we have 2 Junior Infant classes and also some split classes due to the numbers coming to our school. We currently have 322 pupils.  Our school have a wide variety of extra-curricular activities available for our children. They range from Gaelic football, indoor and outdoor hurling, rounders, handball, quiz teams, tin whistle, school band and choir and an athletics team.
